Onyx gemstone is a form of Quartz (SiO₂ chemical composition). The micro-crystalline structure of Onyx locates it in the well known sub category of Quartz, the Chalcedony. The Onyx stone is very similar to Agate in its nature and form naturally in layered structure, characterized by longitudial stripes of different colors: Black, white, black & white, red & white, orange-brown, pink-brown-white, green-brown. The most popular Onyx stone is the Black Onyx, used in many art disiplines.

The Onyx is often identified with the biblical gemstone "Shoham" as part of the "Hoshen" stones used by the high priest. Onyx stones, set in gold, were attached to the shoulder straps of the "Ephod".
